Journal Club – „Is marriage a good institution for everyone?“

Bunt gemischt!

„Is marriage a good institution for everyone?“ – This will be the main topic of the first Journal Club. We would like to invite everyone to come to Glashaus at Sunday, to discuss different attitudes towards marriage equality. The discussion will be based on the text “Skeptical Marriage Equaltiy” (Suzanne A. Kim, Harvard Journal of Law & Gender, Vol. 24, 2010), p. 37-51. The document is also available at the AK Queer website: http://queergenderbayreuth.wordpress.com/

In science as well as in the queer community, there is a controversial discussion about the value of the institution “marriage”. One side considers the right to marry as an important civil right and thus pushes forward to marriage equality. For the other side, marriage is a troubled institution, since it forces people to subordinate and assimilate. However, the author proposes a third scope called “skeptical marriage equality” in which she explores how “we can be skeptical of marriage as a legal category and of its privileged place in law and society, but also favor marriage equality for same-sex couples” (Kim, 2010).

In the next Sunday session of the Journal Club, we will discuss these three approaches towards marriage. First, we will summarize the paper. Later, the AK Queer will give a short presentation about the text. Finally, we encourage people to participate in the discussion about the two different attitudes towards marriage equality and the proposed scope of the author.

Please don’t hesitate attending the Journal Club, even when you didn’t read the text. We will give a short presentation on it, so that everyone will know about the topic.

We hope to see you there!
